All Good in the Hood

Lettering Illustrated Headline

This personal project arose from an idea I had to create an illustrated headline for an article written by Koren Helbig for Frankie magazine's November 2021 issue. I enjoyed reading this piece very much, which is about some actions people can take to increase the chances of making friendships with their neighbours. Frankie magazine is an internationally recognised Australian lifestyle publication with an admiringly visual communication style.

My goal for this illustration was to replace the photo placed above it and the article's headline by creating a lettering design, maintaining the style, lines and general aesthetic of Bookmania, the exquisite typography Mark Simonson designed and used by Frankie on their headlines.

My intention for the design was to keep some of the aesthetic characteristics of the original typeface. I worked with a variable baseline to give the general composition a more dynamic feeling. I also challenged myself to include some elements to the illustration inspired by the article's content and the original photograph's colours, textures and shapes.

Once I sketched the letter forms and the composition, I worked on Illustrator to vectorise the design and place it on the magazine's page layout. The outcome was an illustration that gave the article a pleasant lettering headline.
